Nespresso builds a coffe machine that crushes compatible capsules - but not Pressogno

The Empire strikes back! Nespresso crushes compatible capsulesHELENSVALE, QLD, AUSTRALIA, December 3, 2013 -- In their 1 December 2013 edition, the "SonntagsBlick" in Switzerland reports that the latest generation of Nespresso coffee machines are incompatible with some of the capsule clones currently available in the market and has put that claim to the test. Nespresso has changed the way capsules are pierced, causing some compatible capsules to no longer function properly. The needles in the latest Nespresso models are so thin, that they are not able to pierce the capsule of some competitors and in the extreme case, will crush the capsule.

Work performed by the testers from "SonntagsBlick" confirmed for them, that Nespresso has indeed modified the piercing mechanism in such a way, that the new Nespresso machines won't work with some clone capsules. Nespresso appears to be targeting manufacturers of compatible capsules and in an interview confirmed that since July this year, some machines have been equipped with new injectors. This is "part of our ongoing development" of the capsule system.

Jacobs capsules from US-manufacturer Mondelez perform extremely badly. In 6 out of 10 tests, the capsule was crushed. "With this modification, Nespresso must be specifically targeting Mondelez", says an industry expert.

Pressogno issued the following statement:

The technical modifications that Nespresso machines have undergone in 2013 in no way impact the functionality of our Pressogno capsules.
The capsule that Pressogno is currently using is designed in such a way that the new thinner piercing needles (injectors) do not penetrate through to touch the flat pre-perforated surface, the needles won't be damaged and the capsules won't change shape.
The height of the Pressogno capsule is 27mm, the height of the Nespresso capsule is 28.2mm

Important Note:

As a world first, Pressogno will be launching a closed system capsule in the first quarter of 2014 made out of PBT (Polybutylenterephthalat), an environmentally-friendly material, consisting of 80% recycled PET, which will not only minimise packaging, but also help reduce our carbon footprint.

The surface material of the new Pressogno capsule shows, when compared to the original Nespresso capsule, equivalent performance in the piercing by the injectors of the capsule. The thinner needles in the new Nespresso machines are not negatively impacted.

Coffee Facts: The Bean Groups

Coffee: The Bean Groups

Of the more than 50 species of coffee plant, just two - arabica, indigenous to Ethiopia and robusta, first discovered in the Congo - make up the vast majority of the world's production.
Arabica
This is the most sought-after species and accounts for 70 per cent of the world's output. It is grown at approximately 1,000 - 2, 000 metres above sea level, but the higher the altitude, the better the quality. Those grown at upwards of 1,500 metres can be given labels such as Supreme, AA or Estate. By a freak force of nature, good-quality arabica beans contain about half the caffeine level of low-quality robusta beans. Arabica beans are fairly flat and green in colour with silver blue shades. This species is cultivated in Ethiopia, Jamaica, Brazil, Colombia and Central America.
Robusta
A hardy bean that grows at lower altitudes, and more often than not, at sea level, the robusta needs very little rainfall. This bean makes up 25 per cent of the world's coffee production and, though inferior to the arabica, is still an important part of the coffee industry, used predominantly in blends of ground or instant coffee. It is also very well suited to the espresso method of making coffee. The robusta is found in the highest quality espresso blends, as it helps in the development of the 'crema' on the top of espresso coffee. The bean is fairly small, tends to be oval in shape and before roasting, varies in colour from shades of yellow to light brown. Robusta beans are cultivated in parts of Brazil, West and Central Africa, and throughout South East Asia.
Pressogno
Pressogno coffee uses 100% arabica to create a luxurious coffee feeling. Robusta is added to some flavours to achieve a variety of tastes. The coffees are purchased from the most expert coffee trading companies in Italy and whether they are destined for coffee capsules or coffee pods, our bean coffee is of the highest quality and best provenance. Pressogno has created 5 exclusive coffee blends, each with its own specific aromatic profile. Why not find out your favourite profile at Espressorium.

Reviewed: DeLonghi Nespresso EN95R Espresso Machine

Reviewed: DeLonghi Nespresso EN95R Espresso Machine
espressorium - coffee capsules

An espresso is made by slowly pouring high-pressure hot water through ground coffee. Just like in the best Italian bars, our coffee takes approximately 20 to 25 seconds to pour out into the cup, the optimal extraction time. Slow extraction is a sign of quality.

Faster extraction may indicate insufficient pressure. For optimal results, please use a good quality Nespresso machine with 19 bar water pressure.
The DeLonghi Nespresso EN95RPLUS is my favourite machine in terms of the quality, performance and simplicity. I love my espresso coffee and this machine won't disappoint.
The machine also works well in a small office environment and should be able to handle up to 50 cups a day. It comes with a 2 year warranty and Nespresso will pick up the machine from your home and provide you with a replacement while it is being fixed, so you won't have to miss your favourite Espresso.
In Australia this machine is currently selling for A$175.00 at the Good Guys, the best deal I could find, which makes this a great buy.
There is more choice for Nespresso drinkers. Why not give Espressorium, the premium alternative for under 50 cents a try? Like the original it comes from Switzerland.

What process is used to create the Pressogno Decaff range?

What process is used to create the Pressogno Decaff range?

Pressogno Café Decaff uses the CO2 process, a method used to gently remove caffeine from coffee beans. Compressed to a liquid state, Carbon Dioxide - the compound we exhale with every breath - is a natural solvent which grabs caffeine and pulls it from the bean.

Because Carbon Dioxide adheres only to caffeine and not to the elements that give coffee its great flavour, CO2 decafs have more zing than any other naturally decaffeinated coffees.
The process has the advantage that it avoids the use of potentially harmfull substances.

Have you tried Decaff before? Did you know that consumption of decaffeinated coffee appears to be as beneficial as caffeine-containing coffee with regard to all-cause mortality, according to a large prospective cohort study?
